Overview

Modern infrastructure—such as bridges, dams, tunnels, and high-rise buildings—faces many challenges, including increasing loads, aging materials, and environmental impacts. Under these stresses, structures may deform, which can lead to serious incidents like collapse or breakage. This drives the need for movement monitoring systems that provide real-time data on the structural condition.

The Internet of Things (IoT) has transformed real-time infrastructure monitoring, allowing remote data collection even in hard-to-access areas. IoT-connected sensors transmit data wirelessly, reducing the need for physical inspections and enabling faster response times. The Ethernet Gateway NIO-51 plays a key role in wireless data transmission, connecting serial or Ethernet devices via Mesh Wi-Fi technology.

Application

Monitoring of structural vibration in bridges using accelerometer sensors​​​​​

ICOMTECK’s customer chose the Ethernet Gateway NIO-51, which supports Wi-Fi Mesh technology. This provides more flexibility, replacing older equipment that relied on wired connections.

The core objective of the application is to monitor bridge movement in real time, detecting anomalies before signs of deformation develop into hazardous conditions. The monitoring system tracks structural health using multiple sensors placed at key points on the bridge. Data is processed and analyzed immediately, offering detailed information to help prevent disasters.

For example, bridges and tunnels are subject to forces such as traffic vibration, temperature changes, and wind. Real-time movement monitoring helps to detect abnormal stress that could compromise structural integrity.

NIO-51 Ethernet Gateway in Bridge Motion Monitoring

The industrial Wi-Fi Gateway NIO-51 from NEXCOM delivers robust wireless connectivity and management for bridge motion monitoring applications. NIO-51 supports Mesh Wi-Fi, enabling remote monitoring, real-time data collection, and industrial durability with highly reliable network connections.

Sensors are placed at critical points in the structure, such as the concrete framework, continuously collecting important data to assess the condition of the structure. For example, IoT sensors are commonly used for remote monitoring of dams. These sensors continuously measure water levels, pressure, and structural deformation, and issue real-time alerts when thresholds are exceeded. Through integrating IoT with a real-time monitoring platform, infrastructure stakeholders can access data from anywhere, allowing faster response times.

 

NIO-51 provides flexible protocol conversion, switching between Modbus RTU and Modbus TCP, as well as serial to Ethernet/Wi-Fi and Ethernet to Wi-Fi in a single device. The device also includes high electromagnetic compatibility protection (EMC), and protections against surge, ESD & EFT, a wide operating temperature range, and redundant power, ensuring stable operation and minimizing environmental impact.
